So the author was trying to tell us that richy was popular and all the people admire him but the question was how did he felt he always keeps smiling when he walked and glittering  but how did he feel sad depressed no one knows  but i think the  theme is (that if someone seems happy maybe thier just trying thier hardest not to show and sign of sadness so you dont have to worry about him).
